Home Décor: Bedroom Design Ideas – as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Now we all know that a lot more happens in the master bedroom than just sleeping. And when designing your master bedroom, I want you to consider everything else that is going on in it, before you lay it out. I like to separate a master bedroom into zones. What other functions are happening in the bedroom? Is it also a home office? Is it also a sitting room? Are you watching TV? What else is going on in the room that needs to be considered? Now, the size of the bed. That is the first thing you should consider. And especially here in Manhattan we are very spatially constrained. So I always like to look at the size of the bed first and see how it works with everything else in the room. A good rule of thumb is to figure thirty inches around all sides of the bed. If you have that clearance, at least, at a minimum, you have the correct size bed for your space. Now once you have selected the bed size, you can start to lay out the zones around the bed for everything else you need to take place in the bedroom. And then when you have those zones located you can add lighting appropriately. So if you have a home office space, you can add a task light. If you like to sit and read in your bedroom, you could have have a nice reading lamp next to a chair. Table lamps beside the bed. And how you control the lighting is another thing to factor in. A very rich elegant classic feel, a little bit more traditional. What sets it apart from just a boring traditional look is the texture. Texture, texture,texture. As the color diva, I am all about color and texture. It is very hard to separate those two. They really play off each other and they make it much more interesting and texture helps change the way a color feels to your mind’s eye. In this case, we have tones of gray all over the bed. We have the gray tones on the pillows and the upholstered headboard and a blue tone on the bed itself. Playing with color. Same texture as the back pillows, but different color. We play with texture by adding a leather pillow. A little bit unexpected on a bed, but is not unexpected what you are going for? Does not that add spice to life? That is what I go for. I want someone to walk in and be surprised. I want around every corner to be something that engages you in a way that you did not expect, like the sofa at the bottom of the bed. Put a loveseat or a sofa instead of a bench. Really inviting, really comfortable, and if you have the room, there is nothing that looks better or more interesting than a sofa at the bottom of your bed.
